We haven't been able to go see the construction of the Phoenix Temple since before my surgery, which was 7 months ago today. The last time we saw it, they were working on digging in the hard desert ground to start the basement. Yesterday afternoon, we drove to the site to take a few pictures. It has progressed a lot in 7 months!
They have a deck built so people can view the construction and just past the deck, there is a trailer to go inside and learn a little about the construction and see pictures that have been taken.
The Missionary couple that is running the visitors center told me I could take pictures of the photographs they have displayed inside. The sketch is what the area will look like completed.
The baptismal font is being constructed in the basement. The Missionary couple told us that as far as they know, this is the only font that was built oval, not round. I'm not sure why they decided to do that, but it was apparently very hard to do and had to be torn back down several times to get it right.
The huge stone piece that will go over the front entrance of the Temple was built in Texas. It has not arrived to Phoenix yet, but they were sent a picture. An interesting piece of information the Missionary couple told us is that most people thing that the art work on it is wheat. Since it is for Arizona, it is actually Agave plants, which grow wild in the desert here. Mature plants will sprout a huge stalk that flowers and can grow to be 10-20 feet tall, depending on the plant. So I put a picture next to it as an example of an Agave species so you can see the similarity.
It was a very nice Sunday afternoon activity for us.
